Hello Young Ladies,
I know that you are excited that school is finally out. YAY! However, it does not mean that your brain is turned to the “off” position. Learning is a lifelong journey. If you live in the Abilene area, I invite you to attend the Young Ladies Success (YLS) Conference this summer. Join us to learn how to find joy in every day by creating a “Joy Journal.” You’ll also discover how to avoid gaining unnecessary pounds by learning to prepare healthy foods. In August, we’ll help you set academic goals and dreams to ensure a successful school year by crafting a “Vision Board.” This summer may be hot, but the sessions will be cool and inspiring for you!
Parents, as an educator for over 30 years, I have observed that students who engage in extracurricular activities tend to enjoy school more, achieve higher grades, and have fewer absences. The National Center for Education Statistics states that “Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context, and are thus considered part of a well-rounded education.” Recent research suggests that participation in these activities can enhance students' sense of engagement with their school, ultimately lowering the chances of school failure and dropout (Lamborn et al, 1992; Finn, 1993).
So, what are you waiting for? Space is limited, so head over to the “2024 Summer Series” tab on the Young Ladies Success website to register for one of the three sessions.
Be Successful,
Essie Childers, Executive Director
